Chapter 4 explains what boards are actually for—and why that matters to everyone else. I condense the board’s job into three practices: Partnership with the head of staff, Planning for the congregation’s future, and Policy that clearly delegates authority away from the board table. When boards major in reports and minor in these three, they feel busy but not very influential. When they flip that pattern, boards become less reactive and more forward-looking, without needing longer meetings or more expertise. This chapter gives practical handles for board members who suspect “there must be a better way” but don’t yet have language for it.
