Ch. 3: A Map of Governance and Ministry

Excerpt
Here I offer a simple map for “who does what” in congregational life. The congregation chooses leaders and articulates its mission; the board governs on the congregation’s behalf; the staff leads the day-to-day ministry; and committees or teams support either governance or ministry, but not both at once. This clarity may feel unfamiliar at first, but it lowers conflict and makes decisions more transparent. I introduce key ideas like board policies, staff policies, holy conversation, and the head of staff, which reappear throughout the book and in the Bourne Street example. The map is meant to be clear enough for newcomers, sturdy enough for lawyers, and flexible enough for your particular polity.
