Most congregations land, by habit, in one of three patterns: board-centered, committee-centered, or clergy-centered. Each has strengths, but each also creates predictable headaches—overworked “working boards,” endless committee meetings, or an overburdened minister who becomes the bottleneck. I walk through real-world examples of how these systems actually feel from the inside, with a bit of humor and sympathy. Along the way, I show how triangles among board, staff, and committees quietly raise anxiety and make change difficult. The chapter’s purpose is not to shame any model but to help leaders recognize their own pattern and imagine that something healthier is possible.
