Excerpt
Healthy congregations are built on healthy relationships between lay and clergy leaders. This chapter explores how board members and ministers can work together without either side dominating or withdrawing. I highlight simple practices—clear covenants, honest conversations, agreed boundaries, and regular evaluation—that help trust grow over time. I also name the emotional baggage many of us bring from families, workplaces, and denominational histories, and how those stories can quietly shape expectations. When leaders can talk about these things openly, they move from “us versus them” narratives to a shared sense of responsibility for the congregation’s well-being.
