Excerpt
The Bourne Street Board Policies section is a full-scale example of what this governance approach looks like on paper. Using a fictional—but realistic—urban congregation, I lay out board roles, committees, staff authority, monitoring, evaluation, and planning requirements in actual policy language. Readers see how a board covenant works, how conflicts of interest are handled, how auxiliary groups relate to the church, and how an endowment can be managed with both prudence and ethical commitments. There are concrete rules for things like endowment spending, staff grievance processes, and ministerial reviews, as well as expectations for annual “work products” like open questions and a Ministry Vision. The aim is not to offer the One Right Model, but to give leaders something substantial to borrow from, argue with, and adapt for their own context.
