Photo by Vitaly Gariev There is never enough money to hire people to do everything a congregation’s mission calls for, and so most of the work is done by volunteers. Paid staff contribute expertise and continuity, but success requires the combined efforts of paid and unpaid workers. To do this effectively, a congregation needs one leadership structure to unify and lead its ministry. Many congregations treat paid staff differently from volunteers. I’m often asked, “How can you fire a volunteer?” Just as often, I am asked, “How can you hire, set goals with, and evaluate a volunteer?” These are good questions that reveal a cultural resistance to high expectations, supportive supervision, and clear feedback for all who work in ministry. The result, often, is volunteers who are uncertain whether their work is needed or appreciated, and a lack of alignment between paid and unpaid workers. Who Counts as Staff? As
